From an immigrant.
Gerardeen Santiago's debut collection of twenty-seven poems is varied and ambitious. Her poetry contains vivid imagery, tends toward the lyrical, and is richly layered with allusions. Her writing draws upon her love of literature, experience of culture shock in moving to America from the Philippines as a child, and her scientific background. While the collection is anchored in the deeply personal theme of life-transition, the poetry ranges from serious examination of life’s regrets to joyful celebration of inspiration -- and even epic-fantasy.
Sample poem (_______)
I am the area between the asymptote and the axis,
where zero shoulders infinity.
I am the anticipation before each inhalation,
the reluctance before each exhalation;
But even before these, I am the need auguring the desire.
I am the void before the Bang,
the vacant valence shell,
the sucking vacuum towing a looming tsunami –
I am the blank mind
I am Nothing,
the genesis of possibilities…

Gerardeen Santiago’s Shouldering Infinity gives readers a glimpse into the elusive space of boundlessness through poems that reflect the ensconced coatings of life. Santiago also grants us access into her private journey of transformation through rich descriptions and multilayered introspection. “Oh, leave me live inside my dreams instead! I curled into myself,” she wails in Regrets of a Tree. “The crust that dulls the cutting knife. Both froth and salt sustain me now, whose lips have kissed my battered brow,” screams truth in Self-Reliance. What is most remembered after being immersed in such profundity is Santiago’s universal declaration, “I am the blank mind: I am Nothing, the genesis of possibilities.” From these poems a dawn of possibilities arises, stretching us beyond the finite, into the realms of better understanding our reality.Product details

Shouldering Infinity Poems edition by Gerardeen Santiago Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I never realized I was a poetry reader, but these poems are the expression of a writer drawing on all her experiences, fitting the pieces together in endless interesting variations, and having a great time doing it. What’s not to like? The verse is full of layers, and you can tell the poet is having actual fun putting them together. I love the range of the work, from quirky science allusions to meditations on the immigrant experience. Just a rich, deeply satisfying collection overall.
Wonderful & honest!
Masterful work. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the beauty and complexity of life in these poems. Bravo!
